I have a similar patch in my queue ;-)

I have been looking at improving the default behaviour for handling
documentation, notably with a view to perhaps automagically detecting
where some common systems hide such things as:

- where does docbook2man-spec.pl live?
- where does collateindex.pl live?

I've got a reasonable idea of where RPM and DPKG systems get these
things; FreeBSD seems to be a bit mysterious; it has no
"docbook2man-spec.pl". Jan, is there peradventure a script called
"docbook2man-spec"? That's what the script internally thinks it's
called...

In looking at the PostgreSQL doc/src/sgml/Makefile, it gets a tad more
mysterious; D2MDIR and D2MSCRIPT are defined directly in the Makefile,
rather than being passed from configure. So I think we're "ahead" in
what Slony-I does of what PostgreSQL does...

It seems likely that if we can come up with a better answer on this,
it might also be a good patch to contribute to PostgreSQL proper.
