(Without an ERROR that at least tells us what it's trying to do, this is going to be a very frustrating experience.) There's a -d flag to make. I don't know whether it will help in this case, but it's worth a try. (IIRC, you're definitely using gmake, and not something pretending to be GNU make, right? That's important.) A
