This is what I do... on the replicas I create the schemas without any  
indexes (other than the PK ones) and let slony do its thing.  Once  
slony has caught up the new replica (sl_status on master shows 0 or  
1  pending events) I add the necessary indexes.

I've copied many hundreds of millions of rows across several tables  
in under 2 hours this way (over Gig-E network on a pair of very fast  
dual opterons)

The index creation took another 4 hours, btw :-(
