I would expect so (but have no proof!)... because any clients still 
connected to node 1 will no longer be able to insert/update/delete 
records on the old master which will become locked (I think).

Take a look at pgpool which allows you to place a connection layer 
between your application and the database. I haven't used it but 
apparantly you can manage the connection switchover without having to 
stop and start the clients...
