You just said:

That pretty clearly does not say not to put a release announcement on 
the home page, nor does it even *suggest* not putting an announcement on 
there.

If you'd said not to, then I wouldn't have.

As a thought for a less confusing way of doing things with the next 
release, how about we get the tarball finished and the appropriate level 
of "compiles and works on platform x" before the slony home page is 
updated too?
