Thanks for the tip. On both machines, it was indeed built with --enable-thread-safety. FWIW, this is PG 7.4.2, Slony 1.0.0. With no other hints, I'm off into the code to see what I can find. A reasonable check of the replicated database makes it appear that all tables completed successfully, and replication data is being transferred appropriately from the master.
